Storyline

The polar ice caps have melted, and the earth is covered by water. The remaining people travel the seas, in search of survival. Several different societies exist. The Mariner falls from his customary and solitary existence into having to care for a woman and a young girl while being pursued by the evil forces of the Deacon and his gang of smokers. 
Movie Trivia:
The language Kevin Costner speaks to the lemon-stealing drifter early in the movie is Hindi. 
The shoot was shut down 3 times due to hurricane alerts. 





Midweek Mental Greening
If you keep up with news that’s related to both your mental health and the environment, you might have stumbled across thisBoston Globe piece: Climate Changes Takes a Mental Toll. In it, Emily Anthes describes the mental toll events like global warming and natural disasters can take on us. The anxiety, trauma and depression such events (and even the possibility of such events) can cause some people seriously impacts the quality of their lives.
The article is only a couple of days old, but it’s no surprise some folks are already meeting it with skepticism. American Thinker’s Matt Spivey, for example, calls it “the most illogically crazy article [he’s] seen.”
Whether it’s damage caused by climate change or the havoc wreaked by disasters like Hurricane Katrina, I don’t know why it’s so difficult to believe the possibility of our collective environment as we know spiraling out of control could deliver a blow to our psyches. I don’t know why Spivey feels that, instead of caring about what happens to our planet “in the next 100 years,” basically we should all just suck it up.
We all have our ways of dealing, I suppose.
Anthes wraps up her piece with a nod to the associate director for the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School, Paul Epstein:
In the long term, we may also derive some psychological benefit from banding together with other citizens to mitigate the effects of global warming. Taking action might not only give us back a sense of our own sense of efficacy against a powerful outside force, but also help us build community and social ties that offset stress, said Epstein and other specialists.
“Getting involved can be an antidote to the depression that can come from the overwhelming realizations that we have to face . . . ,” Epstein said. “It can be empowering to realize that what you do is effective.”
Negative Psychological Effects:
-Some experts have drawn a direct correlation between rising temperatures and an increase in agressive and violent behavior, including violent crime. (Anderson, C., PhD 2007) 
>> An example of aggressive and violent behavior would be when a group of "eco-terriorists" nearly destroyed a car dealership in Maryland in 2003.
>> Another example, A group of eco -terrorists destroyed  a housing complex in San Diego, which was easily worth upwards of 50 million dollars. Which was incidentally, considered to be, "too luxurious and energy consuming that same year (2003). 
Physical Effects:
Changes in the environment due to global warming could lead to probable drought conditions caused by scarce rainfall, which could ultimately result in decreases in nutrition levels due to poorer harvests and improper distribution of food. If winter temperatures rise there may be fewer premature deaths due to winter cold. But if summer temperatures also rise there may be additional fatalities from heat stress. The pattern of the world’s diseases may also change. Diseases such as malaria, eradicated from Europe, could return to some areas. Many scientists warn of health effects of extreme weather events such as storms, tornadoes, hurricanes and precipitation extremes that could lead to destruction of property and flooding bringing with it diseases such as malaria and dengue and yellow fever.

A. FINDINGS

1. Weather has a profound effect on human health and well-being. It has been demonstrated that weather is associated with changes in birth rates, and sperm counts, with outbreaks of pneumonia, influenza and bronchitis, and is related to other morbi dity effects linked to pollen concentrations and high pollution levels.
2. Large increases in mortality have occurred during previous heat and cold waves. It is estimated that 1,327 fatalities occurred in the United States as a result of the 1980 heat wave; the number occurring in Missouri alone accounted for over 25% of the total.
3. Hot weather extremes appear to have a more substantial impact on mortality than cold wave episodes.Most research indicates that mortality during extreme heat events varies with age, sex, and race. Factors associated with increased risk from hea t exposure include alcoholism, living on higher floors of buildings, and the use of tranquilizers. Factors associated with decreased risk are use of air conditioning, frequent exercising, consumption of fluids, and living in shaded residences. Acclimatiza tion may moderate the impact of successive heat waves over the short term.
4. Threshold temperatures for cities, which represent maximum and minimum temperatures associated with increases in total mortality, have been determined. These threshold temperatures vary regionally; for example, the threshold temperature for wint er mortality in mild southern cities such as Atlanta is 0deg.C and for more northerly cities, such as Philadelphia, it is -5deg.C.
5. Humidity has an important impact on mortality since it contributes to the body's ability to cool itself by evaporation of perspiration. It also has an important influence on morbidity in the winter because cold, dry air leads to excessive dehydr ation of nasal passages and the upper respiratory tract and increased chance of microbial and viral infection.
6. Precipitation in the form of rainfall and snow is also associated with changes in mortality. In New York City, upward trends in mortality were noted the day after snowfalls that had accumulated 2 inches or more. In Detroit where snow is more com mon, the snowfall accumulation exceeded 6 inches before mortality increases were noted.


Free Willy!

Plot:
Fishermen separate a young orca whale (Willy) from his parents and he ends up in a fish bowl at a marina. Meanwhile, a street kid runs afoul of the law and gets caught vandalising the marina, but his social worker gets him off the hook (so to speak) provided he cleans up his mess at the marina. While there, he befriends the whale and teaches him tricks, something the trainer hasn't been able to do. But when Willy is a dud in front of the audience, the marina owner plans some bad things with the whale, and the boy and his friends must try to  free Willy.
F U N   F A C T:
The movie was about releasing a "killer whale" from the hands of humans who were exploiting him, and who wished to kill him to collect the insurance money. While the fictional whale was released, what happened to the actual whale, the actor? This was, after all, a pretty ironic situation. Many moviegoers began asking this question, and eventually the real "Willie," named Keiko, was released into the ocean.





Orcas, or killer whales, are the largest of the dolphins and one of the world's most powerful predators. They feast on marine mammals such as seals, sea lions, and even whales, employing teeth that can be four inches long. They are known to grab seals right off the ice. They also eat fish, squid, and seabirds.
Though they often frequent cold, coastal waters, orcas can be found from the polar regions to the Equator.
Killer whales hunt in deadly pods, family groups of up to 40 individuals. There appear to be both resident and transient pod populations of killer whales. These different groups may prey on different animals and use different techniques to catch them. Resident pods tend to prefer fish, while transient pods target marine mammals. All pods use effective, cooperative hunting techniques that some liken to the behavior of wolf packs.
Whales make a wide variety of communicative sounds, and each pod has distinctive noises that its members will recognize even at a distance. They use echolocation to communicate and hunt, making sounds that travel underwater until they encounter objects, then bounce back, revealing their location, size, and shape.
Killer whales are protective of their young, and other adolescent females often assist the mother in caring for them. Mothers give birth every three to ten years, after a 17-month pregnancy.
Orcas are immediately recognizable by their distinctive black-and-white coloring and are the intelligent, trainable stars of many aquarium shows. Killer whales have never been extensively hunted by humans.

World Range & Habitat


Next to humans, orca are the most widely distributed mammal. Orca inhabit all oceans of the world but are most numerous in the Arctic, the Antarctic and areas in nutrient-rich cold water upwellings. They have been sighted along the shores of Washington, Oregon, California, Baja California, and along the eastern coast of the United States.

Effects of Captivity:

  • Whales in captivity usually live shorter lives than those in the wild. They also have a lack of stimulation and a lack of space in which to travel. As marine mammologist Naomi Rose says in an interview with PBS, orcas ("killer whales") can travel between 50 and 100 miles in a single day. They are large-brained animals that need space and complex stimulation, which only the ocean can provide.
    Rose explains that female orcas often die in captivity while they are still in their reproductive years. This is extremely rare in the wild. The UK division of the World Wildlife Fund agrees that in captivity, orcas' lives are much shorter. "It can survive between 50 and 80 years in the wild, yet in captivity its lifespan is drastically reduced to perhaps only 10 years---if that," says the WWF-UK.

  • Former dolphin trainer Rick O'Barry, who trained dolphins for the TV series "Flipper," says that captive orcas and dolphins are "so stressed out you wouldn't believe it." As the Humane Society of the United States and the World Society for the Protection of Animals say in their report "The Case Against Marine Animals in Captivity," captivity causes marine mammals to lose their natural feeding and foraging behaviors. Captivity also changes their social behaviors. The report explains, "Stress-related conditions such as ulcers, stereotypical behaviors including pacing and self-mutilation, and abnormal aggression in groups frequently develop in predators denied the opportunity to forage. Other natural behaviors, such as those associated with dominance, mating, and maternal care, are altered in captivity, which can have a substantially negative impact on the animals." Animals that are normally peaceful in their natural environment can become violent when confined.





  • Finding Nemo

    A clown fish named Marlin living in the Great Barrier Reef loses his son, Nemo, after he ventures into the open sea, despite his father's constant warnings about many of the ocean's dangers. Nemo is abducted by a boat and netted up and sent to a dentist's office in Sydney. So, while Marlin ventures off to try to retrieve Nemo, Marlin meets a fish named Dory, a blue tang suffering from short-term memory loss. The companions travel a great distance, encountering various dangerous sea creatures such as sharks, anglerfish and jellyfish, in order to rescue Nemo from the dentist's office, which is situated by Sydney Harbor. While the two are doing this, Nemo and the other sea animals in the dentist's fish tank plot a way to return to Sydney Harbor to live their lives free again.


    The Great Barrier Reef is one of the seven wonders of the natural world, and pulling away from it, and viewing it from a greater distance, you can understand why. It is larger than the Great Wall of China and the only living thing on earth visible from space.


    The reef is located in the Coral Sea, off the coast of Queenslandin north-east Australia.A large part of the reef is protected by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, which helps to limit the impact of human use, such as fishing and tourism. Other environmental pressures on the reef and its ecosystem include runoff, climate change accompanied by mass coral bleaching, and cyclic population outbreaks of the crown-of-thorns starfish.
    The Great Barrier Reef has long been known to and used by theAboriginal Australian and Torres Strait Islander peoples, and is an important part of local groups' cultures and spirituality. The reef is a very popular destination for tourists, especially in theWhitsunday Islands and Cairns regions. Tourism is an important economic activity for the region, generating A$ 1 billion per year.
    Environmental threats:
    Climate change, pollution, crown-of-thorns starfish and fishing are the primary threats to the health of this reef system. Other threats include shipping accidents, oil spills, and tropical cyclones. 

    The Great Barrier Reef is home to approximately:
    1,500 species of fish
    360 species of hard coral
    1/3 of the world’s soft corals
    4,000 species of molluscs (eg. shells)
    800 species of echinoderm (eg. starfish, sea urchins etc)
    24 species of seabirds that live and breed on the islands
    More than 30 species of marine mammals including whales, dolphins and dugongs
    14,000 dugong (Australia’s entire dugong population is about 100,000)
    6 species of marine turtles, all listed as threatened.

    There are three main types of reefs found on the Great Barrier Reef: Ribbon, Platform, and Fringing reefs.
    Fringing reefs are coral structures that are attached to the mainland or to continental islands. In the Great Barrier Reef most fringing reefs are found around islands. Fringing reefs are probably the reef type most commonly seen by visitors.
    Platform reefs are also known as patch reefs and are scattered in the calm, shallow waters between the mainland and edge of the continental shelf. They are usually round or oval patches and often tend to be broken up.
    Ribbon reefs only occur in the northern part of the Great Barrier Reef. They form along the edge of the continental shelf and can grow so high they form narrow walls.

    Tiny masses of coral polyps are responsible for building coral reefs.
    Reefs are masses of limestone made from skeletons of millions upon millions of tiny marine animals and plants.

    It is not one long continuous reef, but a complex system of various marine habitats with more than:
    2900 coral reefs
    600 continental islands
    300 coral cays
